RE: [ronpaul-294] Update from Des Moines

Dear all:

I sincerely regret to inform you that today, the GOTV day, the biggest day of the whole Iowa campaign for the 300 students up here, was completely destroyed–and the circumstances point towards a deliberate sabotage.

We were told from the very beginning that all of our hard work would be nought if we didn’t hit Iowa hard on January 3rd.

Our job? Call every Ron Paul supporter in the state (our numbers were bigger than Huckabee’s), man as many precincts as possible, drive voters around, pick people up, get them back home, check voters off as they come in, &c., &c..

We were told to be ready to leave camp at 9 a.m.

We were ready.

But then at 2:30 in the morning, all the camp leaders received a phone call that the database the Des Moines office put together of all our phone banking and door-to-door canvassing was totally scrambled, jumbled, and even partly deleted. All the data was scattered and completely jumbled. Missing phone numbers. Missing precincts. A big box of random data. Thousands and thousands of voters.

The original file was supposed to have broken all voters down into counties and precincts. Didn’t happen.

Each page was supposed to be correlated with precinct captains and chairmen. Didn’t happen.

We were looking at a day of turning out over 17,000 voters. We maybe called 300.

We picked up nobody.

We manned no caucuses.

So what happened?

We were told we’d have the numbers by 11 a.m.

Then noon.

Then 2.

Then 3.

Then 4.

We finally got the numbers around 4:30. We couldn’t even print them. A couple camp leader floored it to a Kinko’s and printed them out. We got started calling at 5:15. Caucusers were supposed to show up at 6:30.

I have received word that one particular person is responsible for all this.

I’ve also heard word that this is not true. That’s why I won’t release the name.

In any case, the database the Des Moines office was supposed to be compiling was completely compromised, either technically or personally. The word used to describe the master file was “unusable.”

I don’t know what to make of this, but everyone here is super despondent.

If true, then I have to simply comment that having a database become a “single point of failure” for a GOTV effort is supremely unwise. Ever heard of backups? Off site redundant data storage? So if the story is true, the failure was double: not only the specific SNAFU or sabotage, but also an unnecesarily compromisable approach towards the management of critical data.

While I agree with RockHoward about any failure to back up the data being a tragic loss, if it is found that this was done deliberately by outside forces, then this will be our Watergate and it should be spread far and wide throughout the media. Ouch.

I was a student volunteer in the Des Moines, Iowa Ron Paul campaign office.

Here is what happened:

The campaign hired an individual who promised to deliver the contact list which was admittedly confused. That individual did not come through with his project.

Additionally, there was a student volunteer named Edwardo from southern California who had been there for an extended period of time. He was somehow given the responsibility of organizing all of the 2008 caucus locations and their corresponding short codes.

He did finish that list just in time for the complete list to be assembled. However, he decided to make up his own codes instead of the ones that everyone else was using. He was relieved of his duties, and was send home.

That screwed things up.

The main thing that I saw in Iowa was a complete lack of organization. It has been explained to me that the Iowa strategy was rolled out to quickly and too last minute. Kinks were inevitable.

This is not a personal attack, but I believe that Edwardo could be a plant. I don’t believe that he is involved in a meetup group in southern California, and he claimed to be a real estate agent.

It is my personal opinion that the amount of private contractors running the campaign was astonishing.

The computer wiz/graphic artist admitted to me that he had stolen the source code to a fantastic database management tool specifically written to compile call/data lists for campaign use. He said that he had obtained it while working on a previous campaign. He offered this database management program to the Ron Paul campaign for $20,000. The campaign said no, thank you.

There are many more reasons why things did not go as well as we had hoped. The number of voters that we had expected to caucus for Ron Paul was 20,577. As all of you know, only half that amount actually turned out.

I hope this is not an indication of how the campaign will be run.

I have one suggestion for everyone. Submit conceptual artwork to replace the standard Ron Paul hope for America signs. Our signs are boring. The campaign cannot sell Americans on truth alone. Marketing is a weak point for the campaign. Submit your artwork!

Hearsay and bullshit, you idiots.

Here’s the bottom line — if you weren’t paid staff in that office, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Calling Edward a plant IS a personal attack, and calling this a last-minute compromise of data is completely ignorant of the situation. Not to mention… Humihaar dangerously only has half his facts intact. All of you - do the rumor-mongering internet a favor and shut the fuck up.

Yes frappuzoid, everything starts with a simple story.

One thing is clear, media is to be checked and rechecked, new media or old. I am glad that the person came forward with this story. It might turn out true or false but it will get out one way or another. Fox is bias, everyone just knows it and moves on, cnn and the rest are no saints either, blogs can be simple attack pieces or just lies.

You would do better with that message if you don’t act like a lol kid.

I also was at week one…. we worked very hard and our leaders barely slept making sure our list were orderly and there was clear communication with hq…I knew Edwardo he told far fetched stories but seemed like a nice guy… and at camp everyone was so into RP. It was awesome when we talked it wasnt about proving you knew more politics… it was all about adding your too bits to make us all well educated on the issues at hand. I seriously doubt anyone questioned edwardo’s faithfulness…. hes was strange but I didnt think things would end up like they did….
