Paul Moves Into Second in West Virginia GOP Delegates
Great news from our friends in West Virginia!
HuntingtonNews.net reports:
An updated listing of Republican delegates who registered for the Feb. 5 statewide Charleston convention has been announced by wvgopconvention.com. The new tally adds some of the registrations that came in by mail. At least one additional update is anticipated.
Mitt Romney leads the committed delegates with 191 followed by Ron Paul at 177, Fred Thompson 157, Mike Huckabee 126, Rudy Giuliani 89, John McCain 25, Duncan Hunter 7, and Alan Keyes 5. A total of 589 delegates are listed as “uncommitted.”
What we all need to be wondering about is that number 589. This is because it is not required for a delegate to declare for a candidate:
Delegates to the state convention are selected in three ways; first, all voting members of the State Executive Committee, including county chairmen, are delegates. Second, each county executive committee names 12 delegates from among their number to serve as delegates. If a county committee has less than 12 members, that committee may name others to fill those slots. Finally, each county is awarded additional delegates based upon the number of registered Republicans in the county, with a further bonus for counties where President Bush won a majority of the vote in 2004.
Candidates for delegate can declare a presidential candidate preference, in which case the preference will appear beside that candidate’s name on the county ballot.

How many of those undeclared delegates are quietly going to stump for Dr. Paul?
Considering the sort of receptions we Paul supporters sometimes get from the GOP, I think it would be prudent to suggest that many delegates are keeping their loyalty to the good doctor under wraps.
We’ll be keeping our eye out for further developments.
